…and why is it so important?
If you are a budding business owner, you probably hear over and over about the importance of a Mission Statement. When I was first starting out, I had a little bit of knowledge about what it meant to have a Mission, Vision, and Goals for the business. I was halfway through my MBA program when I started my business, so I knew in theory why it was relevant, but I did not understand what it meant in practice.
Having a clear mission statement gives you and others an outlined idea of your business purpose. As the owner (in your head), you know what your purpose and mission, but investors, lenders, customers, and employees need a defined idea to cling to as well.

Mission Statement: The Basics
Your mission statement is what your organization does or provides and its overall goal and purpose. You will see several other definitions for your mission statement, and this is my condensed version.
The key when writing your Mission Statement is to not overthink it. I fell into a pit trying to create the perfect Mission Statement that was eloquent, verbose, thought-provoking, layered, with every single aspect of my business, as well as goals and my services, all while trying to keep it concise. I ended up with a long wordy paragraph that was repetitive. I scrapped that mission statement (more of mission paragraphs) and began rewriting. I developed something that showed my personality and the personality of my business (yes, businesses can have personalities too). It encompassed my goals and the purpose of my business.
My Mission Statement
The more I thought about what my business does, what it stands for, and what I can provide to my customers, my answer was simple.
My mission is to empower my clients by providing top notch services and aiding in the success of their business and organization. My business is my clients and I strive every day to deliver.
How to Write Your Mission Statement
Think back to why you started your business. Why did you start your business? What was your purpose? Write down some ideas and thoughts. From there think why you continue to run your business, what do you want in the future? Combining both of those ideas will give
you a good idea of your mission and why you do what you do. Be honest and real with yourself and that will shine through in your statement.
