We al

l work differently and thrive in different environments. Productivity is based on a positive mindset and an environment that gives you energy and the motivation to perform to your maximum potential.
Work environments can be just diverse as people are. You could like the hustle and bustle of working in a busy open office concept – Waving to your workmate across the room. You may enjoy a cubicle concept, close enough to interact with people but still in your own space. Maybe you prefer having your own office, with a closed door – to let people know when you’re focusing and need uninterrupted time, or vice versa. Or, if you worked through the pandemic, you may have become comfortable working in your living room or under the covers in your bedroom.
Other aspects come into play when defining your ideal work environment. It could be something as simple as temperature – some people work better in the cold because it keeps them fresh, while others like working in warmer temperatures, it makes them feel at peace. What about windows and light? Do you like having big open windows or rooms with a lot of light? Does that motivate you, or does it make you want to forget working and go frolic outside? Do you want a standing desk or a desk paired with a nice comfy rolling chair?
Change of Scenery
When I started working full-time on my business, I worked from home. I had a nice balcony that I jazzed out with furniture, and I absolutely loved it. I loved how the sun shown on me as I worked, the birds serenading me, and breathing the fresh clean air. Outside on my balcony was my second office. It was closed off from my usual distractions like my affectionate cats (who want to walk on my computer and sit on my lap), my TV, and my bed that echoes my name.
I could work hours outside, and I was productive, and I knew it. In a few short months, my haven became too cold. In the early months of fall, I bundled up a bit, but my fingers started to go numb – I could feel my typing slowing down and I couldn’t complete as much work as I once could.
I switched it up and worked from inside my home for the next month. I was working, but I didn’t feel as productive as I did before. It was time for a change of scenery. I alternate between coffee shops, libraries, little cafés, or shared workspaces. I like maximum light, open space, and I like some noise and energy happening around me. I find when I leave my home and I’m surrounded by other people working on their computers, reading, or writing, I can work more efficiently.
If you ever notice you’re not working as productively as you’ve been in the past, look internally and externally. Take note of what worked for you in the past, what you like, and what you don’t like, and try to recreate your ideal work environment.
